Stella Matutina Care Home, Lancashire

Stella Matutina has participated in RDB Star Rating’s scheme each year since 2005 and achieving the coveted 5 Star Rating each time in their star rating assessment, with their most recent RDB Award valid for the whole of 2019.

Stella Matutina is owned and run by The Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary, which is a religious order with a charitable status. However people from all religious denominations are welcome to live at the home. The home provides personal care and accommodation to 42 older people. Accommodation is offered in single bedrooms, the majority of which have en-suite facilities. The home is situated in a residential area of Lytham St Annes and is close to local shops and amenities.

Dawn Ward is the Registered Manager who handles the RDB Star Rating inspections from the start to the finish. Dawn chooses to undertake the Star Rating on an annual basis because it focuses on the outcomes of care and services from the perspective of residents. Additionally she has found it helps to achieve the Well-Led section of CQC as they look for homes with accredited schemes, like RDB Star Rating and Investors in People.

Dawn believes that one of the biggest challenges facing the Care Sector is that there is not enough incentive for recruiting new staff, which makes its very difficult to attract and maintain quality staff. Dawn stated “All too often, we provide all of the training in the private sector to create very good staff members and then we end up losing them to the NHS, with all their incentives which we cannot offer. The funding in the social care sector only further contributes to the outlook that the Health Sector can provide additional perks like extra holiday, more sick pay, bonus schemes, compared to the Care Sector”.

During the last few years, Dawn has seen a significant change in resident’s needs, stating “residents are completely different than they used to be, their care needs much higher making meeting their needs more costly in time and finances. There is a lot of focus on keeping people at home longer and as a result when they do come to residential care, they are in need of a lot more assistance”.

Dawn states “with RDB Star Rating being an annual assessment, unlike Investors in People which is every 3 years, you keep on top of all your quality assurance like questionnaires, staff development plans and staff training. The assessment is not just an inspection of where the home is currently, but it can be used as part of the developmental and improvement process of the home, by highlighting areas we may have overlooked. It is also very important to be able to say that we have an additional award to show our quality service.”

The RDB Star Rating process is created in a way that allows the provider to organise and prepare for the inspection via the Participants Pack we send to homes, prior to our inspection. Dawn told us “the Participants Pack helps us to complete the CQC’s PIR which also ensures that we remain prepared for a CQC inspection year on year.”

The primary focus of RDB inspections is to look at the delivery of care and service outcomes from the eyes of the residents and allow the home to evidence the quality of their services. Dawn said “By having the RDB Star Rating inspection, we can market our home with more credibility which makes a huge difference. It highlights that we are better than other care homes that don’t undertake the scheme. Staff feel very proud to be part of the process and it is well worthwhile for any employer because it is a comprehensive and resident based approach, and that’s what it’s all about!”
